MARC Scholar's Commitments

 

Overview of MARC Scholar's Commitments while in the MARC program:

 

  • Be committed to participate in MARC for two full years

  • Maintain fulltime matriculation (12 credits) at Hunter College in an undergraduate degree program

  • Maintain at least a 3.00 GPA each semester

  • Take the GRE exam in the first semester while in the MARC program 

  • Spend 15-20 hours per week conducting research at one of Hunter’s labs throughout the academic year

  • Attend a summer external internship program (typically 10 weeks)

  • Attend National and local conferences to present research

  • Receive Responsible Conduct of Research Training

  • Register each semester for the Science 200-001 course

  • Attend other activities specifically designed to broaden students’ knowledge base and preparedness for graduate school

  • Participate in a MARC student service activity to enhance student’s professional skills 

  • Apply to PhD programs in Senior Year 

 
Summer InternshipA MARC scholar's research skills gained during the academic school year at Hunter College prepares him/her to complete a summer internship at another major research institution (typically for 10 weeks).
 
Critical Thinking Workshop: The workshop focuses on strengthening a scholar's vocabulary, critical and analytical skills to hlep him/her with classes and GRE examination.  This workshop is taken at the start of the MARC scholar's appointment.
 
Responsible Conduct of Research Training:  As an undergraduate student involved in research related activities, a MARC scholar is trained in the responsible conduct of research.  This involves both online and in person instruction.
 
Academic support: For challenging science courses, tutoring is available.
